Have you ever wondered what saltwater live rock is?  I know I did.  What I have learned is that the “live rock” is actually dead coral or other minerals that have broken off reefs in the ocean.  The reason they are called salt water live rock is due to the abundance of living organisms on and in all the little pores of the rock.  Different bacteria, algae and small invertebrates use this rock as their home.  The living organisms have very beneficial effects on maintaining the nitrogen and ammonia levels in a salt water aquarium.  The living substances on the rock create a healthy ecosystem for your salt water aquarium.  The benefits to your aquarium system are tremendous.  Some of the benefits of using live rock in your salt water aquarium include: decreasing ammonia levels, providing hiding places for fish and tunnels to swim through.  Another benefit to the ecosystem is that the bacteria breaks down  the wastes and convert them into harmless substances.
